The much publicised piracy control measures of the government will be significantly impacted by the recent acceptance of the Telecom Package by the European Union. Members of the European parliament today accepted the provisions of this review of existing telecommunications legislations.
A massive 510 people voted for the Telecoms Package against 40 opposing it. The provisions thus accepted will affect the use of internet in all countries falling within the EU. This is of special significance in the UK where the upcoming general elections will also play a vital role in determining what laws are being made.
The votes also carry special meaning for those opposing the anti-piracy laws, which allow for temporary disconnection of internet accounts of suspected offenders. There has been a huge uproar against the provisions of this law, which is being termed unfair and disproportionately harsh.
The new Telecom Package is seen as a reprieve by these protestors as it treats internet freedom as a basic right of individuals. It also proposes some measures to standardize mobile broadband across the EU countries. The Labour party’s pet project of high-speed broadband finds support in this bill, which also paves the way for better communication and cooperation between statutory regulatory authorities across the EU.
Addressing the digital divide concern, the package will aim for equitable distribution of broadband spectrum over providers and effective management of resources so that cost effective solutions are made available.
