When Playing Poker
Thursday 31 December 2009 @ 10:21 am

When playing poker, one of the hardest hands to play is when you have two pair against a possible flush or straight draw.

Let’s say you’re engaged in a game of Texas hold em, and you’re holding a king and jack of hearts, and the flop comes up K-J-6, all spades. Suddenly, your two pair does not look as enticing as if the flop came out with three different suits.

It’s even more difficult in pot limit Omaha, where each poker player has four hole cards. That makes it much more likely that a person just flopped a straight, in fact the probability of that happening is twice as much than in hold em.

In situations like these, you have to a bit more cautious than if there wasn’t a flush (or straight) possibility on the flop. Certainly, you don’t want to simply assume your opponent has flopped a flush. And, even if they did, there is always the possibility of your two pair becoming a full house on the turn or river.

Here’s my advice in this situation: If it’s hold em you’re playing, I would feel pretty confident, since the odds are less that your poker opponent flopped a flush. I would make a good sized bet; if he calls or raises you, then use what you learned about that person’s playing style to determine if he’s bluffing or not.

In Omaha, I would be much more cautious about the flush. Especially if there are three or more players in the pot, there odds are good someone flopped the flush. Approach with caution.

Bowling Scratch: Develop Your Aim
Saturday 25 July 2009 @ 6:09 am

I always run into a recreational bowler ready to approach this intricate sport competitively for the first time. If you accept bowling is your calling, this is key beginning in your development as a real bowling competitor. This introduction to “Bowling Like a Pro” is for you. Professionals in a local bowling pro shop are there to assist you in harnessing bowling potential. Just like a lot of sports, the bowling balls do all the work (after you roll them). That’s a joke. Fine, so it’s more complicated than that. Don’t fret, we’ll get you bowling down the right lane.

If you haven’t already, buy your own properly-fitted bowling supplies at a nearby bowling pro shop. It’s not a sales pitch, it actually matters. It’s no joke, have your favorite ball drilled, and you’ll bowl more consistently. A well selected bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. The same goes for having well-made bowling shoes which haven’t been worn out by a million people!

If you may have previous found the right bowling equipment, now it’s time for another important piece of bowling advice: aim how the pros aim. As you face the pins, try not to focus on the pins. Line up using the points about 15 feet down the lane, like a sight on a firearm. Ever noticed them? You’ll find it more effective to roll through a mark much nearer. To take full advantage, it should be your habit to line-up at the precise location on the wood on every attempt. Roll from the same place, in the same way and you can fine-tune your aim using the arrows in the lane.

Do we have any tips for curves, for proper speed and ball control? It is our bowling tip #3. It’s all in the pricy reactive ball. Actually, pros bowl and regularly roll two or three bowling balls to get aggressive pin action, according to where they are. But greenhorns might want to work with just one, and don’t get a ball that is too heavy for you. A lot of semi-pro bowlers use bowling balls made for special resin expert grip. Steer clear of them, because these special-made balls often make even some well known bowlers look like they don’t know what they’re doing. That about raps it up. A pro from our bowling shop will return shortly.

We bowl with Team “Pindemonium” made up of the guys and gals at our marketing business just outside Cincinnati. I chime in with guidance to aspiring bowlers on the web and at the bowling center. Finally, I want to wave hello at my bowling buddies heading into tournament play. Roll on!

Pre-flop Dominance
Tuesday 7 July 2009 @ 3:04 pm

While one of the keys to winning hold ‘em is waiting for your poker cards, another key is to play aggressively when you get the ones you want. A good pre-flop raise has a lot of benefits. One is that it makes the other players at the casino online play more cautiously, putting you in control of the hand. When you’ve got control of the hand, you can win it even if you don’t have the cards.

Say you’ve been dealt a pair of 10’s, and you raise four times the big blind. If you get any callers, they’ll be on guard about your online poker hand. A pre-flop raise makes other players aware that you’re confident in your cards, and they’ll get a bit more tentative with theirs. Even if the flop misses you, you can scare the other players into giving a free card or two. Say the flop comes out 8-J-4. You’ve got a middle pair, but if no one else hits the jack, you can post another raise, say double the blind to keep anyone from trying to by the pot. This gives you another chance at turning another 10 on the next card, and it might even scare the rest of the table out of the hand for you.

The Joys of Snowmobiling
Thursday 19 February 2009 @ 12:32 am

Way deep in the heart of the coldest locations in the world there is usually snow. This snow makes for a difficult surface to walk on. Walking through snow is great if your health if you want to get a great workout after taking your Acceletrim diet supplement capsules, and since it is difficult to walk on it requires more energy to use. Using a car can be tough because the snow is slippery and the car can slide around. Horses are great in snow, but this is not the best place for them walk on because it is slippery for them.

So how do you get around? One of the best ways to get around is with the use of a snowmobile. The thing about snowmobiles is your body is exposed to the cold. I am not sure why in the world there are not more snowmobiles available with an encapsulated covering over the top. It might have to do with the case if there was a crash, it might be kind of strange. Snowmobiles work so good in snow, they move with ease, it is like you are skating on top of the snow with little effort. In some of the most remote areas a snowmobile can be the only means of transportation. Other people love to ride snowmobiles for leisure. On the weekend for fun people can go out and explore on their snowmobiles and have fun. They can go very fast and the cold clean air will wiz right by.

When to Fold in Poker
Wednesday 29 October 2008 @ 10:02 am

Everyone thinks they can draw to a winner or they think their top pair is always good. It gets even tougher to fold a good hand. When you have the second-best hand at the online poker table you are going to lose more often than not, and there’s no prize for coming in second. Recognizing that you need to fold this hand is one of the strengths of a good player.

But generally in Texas Holdem games, you want to play your premium hands preflop.

To explain, there are basically two major decisions to be made at limit Texas Holdem. The first happens preflop, whether to play your hand or not, and the second decision is to be made on the turn.

The flop decision is not that important because most of the time you will just be making or calling a small bet; you should base this on pot odds. Preflop, if you have just a marginal hand, you want to play suited connectors/small pairs more when it is a multi-way pot and less when it is about three people seeing the flop. For big cards such as AJ or KT, the opposite is the case. Be more willing to play these hands in a heads up or three-way situation. Always fold hands those troublesome hands like J4 offsuit or Ace with a small kicker. The kickers are just too weak to win a late hand showdown. Avoiding playing these starting hands is a good way to avoid trouble and having to fold a good, but not great hand.

The second major decision is on the turn. Assuming you call the turn, you should call the river because it would be a disaster to fold the winning hand on the river. Calling the turn and the river means investing two big bets, equivalent to four small bets. Assuming the pot is raised preflop and just one bet is made postflop, you would have only invested three bets to see the turn. Thus, you can fold at the turn and lose slightly less than half the money you would have lost had you called to a showdown.

The river is not the time to fold your hand. The only exceptions to this are when you missed a draw (such as a small flush draw) or if there is so much betting and raising that you know you are beaten.

Asian Gaming Popularity
Monday 15 September 2008 @ 2:59 pm

The gaming business is booming, I don’t think anyone disputes that. In North America and Europe, the gaming industry, and poker in particular, are big business.

In Asia as well, massive online casino resorts that have been built in the last several years have spurred gaming growth in that continent too. In fact, Macau’s success as a gaming haven is spurring the industry in Asia, with some countries already building massive casinos and others moving to legalize them, reports Channel News Asia.

The provision of wholesome entertainment, retail shopping, and hotel and convention facilities as part of the gaming experience is helping to shed the usual image of casinos as linked to gambling, crime and sleaze, the news agency reports.

Macau’s casinos reported revenues of $9.7 billion (US dollars) in the first seven months of this year, up 44 percent from the year before.

Singapore is constructing two integrated casino resorts, one of them set to open in late 2009, after the government lifted a long-standing ban on casino gambling.

Canada-based Asian Coast Development Ltd. (ACDL) is constructing a US$4.2 billion beachfront project in Vietnam’s Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, which will include the communist nation’s first Las Vegas-style casino.

This is good news for poker players in those countries, as they will soon have even more gambling options.
