Standing out at Career Faires
Sunday 31 January 2010 @ 9:09 pm

Standing out at a Career Faire can make a difference in your job hunting. Career Faires are starting to pick up, and Dice is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a SF Bay Area Career Fair in January, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 career faires scheduled for 2010 across the States.

How do you compete at a Career Fair? The contention can be sizeable, but you can help yourself stand out from the bunch with advance preparation. At AA-Careers, we have a simplified six-step process to get ready. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the organizations that are going and pick your targets. Use the web to research the organizations that are there before you even decide to go. Go to their websites and see if they have their openings posted. Pick a tenable number to go after, and get ready to spend about an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 9 in a day, and four or five is a much more reasonable target. For each company, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and contacts you know. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You’ll end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the hiring department is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the demands of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘thumbnail sales pitch’ for each likely organization/position combination. Write down a 90 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally describing why you are a fantastic prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the company at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re targeting. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job requirements. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be a no-brainer to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each position - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a clearly labeled folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be fittingly groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any cologne or fragrance sparingly, if at all.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Beware of the Newest Activity Online: Phishing
Tuesday 5 January 2010 @ 11:31 am

No. I’m not talking here about the outdoor activity enjoyed
by many. And no again; I did not misspell it. Phishing is
the name given to the latest online scam where millions of
unwary Americans are getting their identities stolen.

This fraudulent activity is considered the fastest growing
crime of modern times. The favorite target groups of
phishers seem to be very young children and senior citizens,
as they do not often ask for credit reports, fill out credit
card applications or solicit loans. This allows the thieves
to go undetected for longer periods of time; but still, be
careful. We all are potential targets.

Remember when throwing away unshredded documents with
personal information in the trash bin was considered a big
risk for identity theft? While this still happens, identity
thieves have become more sophisticated in recent times, and
this is how they do it…

Phishers create bogus e-mails that look as if they came from
large, well-known institutions and banks, such as eBay,
Paypal, Citibank, EarthLink, and Wells Fargo among others.
These e-mails claim that you are due for an account update,
or that the account number, password, social security number
or other confidential information needs to be verified. Then
they warn you, stating that if you do not do it within a
certain period of time, that your account will be closed,
terminated, the service discontinued, or something to that
effect.

They even provide you with links to websites that look
legitimate, because they hijack the real logos of these
well known banks, and trusted institutions and companies.
And that is the scary part… these e-mails look 100%
legitimate, but they are not.

In some cases it goes even further… some of these phishers
are installing spyware on your computer to monitor your
online activities. So… should you leave the online world for
good? Not necessarily.

These are a few things you can do to protect yourself from
these scammers:

1. Do not respond to any e-mail that asks for personal
information from you, such as account number, credit card
number, user names, passwords, etc. If you suspect that the
e-mail, indeed, be legitimate, contact your bank or
institution to verify this.

2. When in doubt, visit the Anti-Phishing Working Group for
an update of the latest scams, and tips to avoid becoming a
victim. The website’s URL is www.antiphishing.org

3. Websites like www.Paypal.com, www.citibank.com, and
www.ebay.com, offer security tips and tell you what
information they’d never ask for in an e-mail.

4. Get anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date.

5. If you suspect you have received a fraudulent e-mail, do
not click on any links within it, and forward it to the FTC
at uce@FTC.gov

Finally, if you suspect you’ve been a victim of this fraud,
get a copy of your credit report immediately to check for
unusual activity. If you discover that you’ve been a victim
of identity theft, close your account at once and…

- Call the Credit Bureau.

- File a police report.

- Call the FTC ID theft hotline at (877)IDTHEFT.

- Alert other financial institutions where you have accounts.

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, phishers send
millions of e-mails a day, getting about 5% response. Even
with this low response, it is estimated that about 150,000
Americans have fallen prey to these scams since May of 2004.
Get informed. Do not become a victim yourself.

Filtering Spam on MS Exchange Mail Server

MS Exchange Server - Filtering Spam Effectively

The increase in the number of spam e-mails raise the need to monitor and eliminate unwanted messages - ensuring that the Microsoft Exchange system function correctly

Malicious e-mail adds trouble and decreases productivity and is a major threat to todays business world . Companies receive thousands of deceptive, indecent and irking e-mails in bulk on a regular basis. Spam is a jargon used commonly to express discarded, undesirable and promotional e-mails or junk e-mails. Spam is not an acronym, thus it doesn’t denote something. A spam e-mail is usually an e-mail with commercial content that is sent to thousands of recipients who never requested any kind of information from the person or organisation sending it.

Getting huge volume of unwanted commercial e-mails can significantly cost the individuals and businesses a lot of time and resources as they have to sort out the legitimate mails, removing the unsolicited messages and this process, at times, become very exhaustive and frustrating, thus hindering efficiency.

Deleting spam is a time consuming process, email server up-time and performance suffers, and your network faces a security risk from malevolent messages. Added to that, a company also risk that spam e-mails causes harm to systems and network that cannot be repaired which means disorder, work loss and increased costs.

The only measure against the spam threat ensuring total security and protection is professional assistance. Make sure your mail server is shielded properly to assure that every byte of passing data is filtered and blocked against spam. Typically, a server spam filter is a software application that scrutinizes the incoming messages, spotting spam on the basis of pre-determined configurations while detaching the unwanted e-mail so that it never reaches the users inbox. One of the often used mail servers is the Exchange Server developed by Microsoft, and this product from Microsoft makes core mail services fast and reliable.

Spam plugins can be a major help carrying out the filtering on an Exchange Server and preventing junk mail. A server side spam filter enables users to automate the procedure to sort and remove spam at the server level i.e. before it reaches the internal network and each user’s personal computer. An automatic procedure that filters out spam is recommended because it protects your internal network and each single connected personal computer. In addition is prevents loss of information and user downtime.

No technology used to filter spam is perfect. Periodically a network administrator still needs to monitor all filtered mails to prevent that Microsoft Exchange does not block legitimate mails.

Buying Your Individual Winning Online Lotto Ticket Has Never Been so Available for the Euro Lotto
Thursday 20 August 2009 @ 6:47 pm

Have you ever enquired what the easiest means to take part in Euromillions is?

How could you acquire as much as attainable? Or even to scoop a European Lottery Jackpot?

Therefore what can you do to step-up your prospects?

Some players just walk across the high street and then buy their so-called winning lottery tickets. They hope to win. But then the odds of winning the lottery are one in a few of millions…not very hopeful, right?

Happily, according to the EuroMillions lottery statistics, two in three of Lotto Jackpot winners are lotto syndicates!

Therefore, we all see the solution. Obviously you gain a greater chance to win the Lotto Jackpot if you belong to a syndicate.

How syndicates function?

A Euro Lottery Syndicate is a group of players who pool their money and then buy as many lottery tickets as possible. Every ticket has different numbers; thus odds are greater than taking part as an individual.

If the syndicate wins, each member obtains a portion from the winnings. So the more members that are in your e-lottery syndicate the greater your individual opportunities are but; likewise your share is smaller.

You can just do a small survey on the net, use - Bing, Yahoo and Google or possibly any other search engine. Or possibly you could see some in your own localised newspaper publishers in classifieds section.

Or possibly you might decide to join an elottery syndicate

There are a lot of reasons

- You will acquire a professional service
- You will not miss a lotto draw
- You will get detailed statistics in your players back office
- Your lotto winnings are accumulated and you will have a MoneyBookers, Click2Pay or Cheque payment with your individual percentage!

- All this and more from the comfort of your individual home

For me it means that the lotto syndicate employs an established mathematical system and that guarantees that you will match at least one lotto number in each and every prize draw.

Plus, that means that still your own pay out from Euro Lottery syndicate profits is bigger than you would win taking part in same lottery numbers on your own!

And finally, that means you may become an affiliate partner and then after meeting some obtainable, attainable requirements you can be taking part in your favorite Euro Lottery syndicate in effect for free…or you can be in effect building up your own new income while playing lotto.

The option is yours:

The option is yours - Play on your own. Or play the smarter way:

Take Part in a Euro syndicate and win more often.

Or possibly be even wiser and:

Play in a Euro Lottery syndicate and win a lot more often plus cover your own lottery ticket price and then play for free plus earn an additional income.

Buying Alcohol Abroad
Tuesday 21 April 2009 @ 4:38 pm

Twenty-one-year olds are the only ones who can drink in America. This applies as well to those who bring in imported booze. As long as they are of legal age, visitors can import to the United States, free of customs duty, a single quart (0.95l) of alcoholic beverage. Some states however impose lesser allowance; any more and the beverages in question are either withheld or taxed under applicable laws.

Upon entry, items must not be wrapped as gifts so customs officials can easily scrutinize them. Presently, the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau explicitly restricts the importation of absinthe or any other distilled spirits. Unless these products have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and labeled according to Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) provisions, no distilled spirits known as absinthe can gain entry.

Buying Cigars, Fresh Goods

Other items that can be brought in duty-free are a hundred (100) cigars from anywhere but Cuba, 200 cigarettes, and 3 lbs. tobacco. Gifts amounting to $100 incur no customs duty costs too. Likewise, tourists to the US can only return home with up to US$10,000 if they are not declared to customs authorities. All in all, America forbids the entry of fruits, canned goods, vegetables, and others coming from outside its territories.
