New Evidence Shows The Lasting Effects of Pesticide Exposure
Thursday 17 June 2010 @ 1:53 am

A new study suggests that moderate exposure to pesticides could yield long-term negative results to the people exposed to them. These findings should serve as warning to those who indiscriminately spray pesticides around the house, exposing their children, pets and other loved ones.

This new research shows that farmers who used agricultural insecticides experienced increased neurological symptoms, even when they were no longer using the products. Data from 18,782 North Carolina and Iowa farmers linked use of insecticides, including organophosphates and organochlorines, to reports of reoccurring headaches, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, hand tremors, numbness and other neurological symptoms. Some of the insecticides addressed by the study are still on the market, but some, including DDT, have been banned or restricted.

These findings will be available online in April, and published in the June issue of Environmental Health Perspectives. The research is part of the ongoing Agricultural Health Study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute, two of the National Institutes of Health, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

“This research is really important because it evaluated the health effects of agricultural chemicals as they were commonly used by farmers. It’s different from previous studies that focused on pesticide poisoning or high dose exposures, for example when large amounts of a chemical were accidentally spilled on the skin,” said Freya Kamel, Ph.D., a researcher for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

Researchers found that nearly 3,000 participants had a high lifetime exposure to insecticides–that is, they used insecticides more than 500 days in their lifetime. Nearly 800 of these farmers reported more than 10 neurological symptoms compared to those using insecticides fewer than 50 days. The researchers found no significant association between neurological symptoms and other chemicals, including herbicides or fungicides, and only a weak association between fumigant exposure and neurological symptoms.

The researchers found no significant association between neurological symptoms and other chemicals, including herbicides or fungicides, and only a weak association between fumigant exposure and neurological symptoms.

Some of the insecticides used by the licensed farmers over the past 25 years are no longer available commercially. DDT, a well known example of an organochlorine, has been banned for use in the US since 1972. Organophosphates, such as malathion, chlorypyrifos, and diazinon, have been banned or restricted for home and garden use in the US. However, some of the pesticides examined, including carbaryl and some pyrethroids, are available to home gardeners, although in different formulations and in lower concentrations, which may make them less hazardous.

“Because the participants in this study are telling us they have never been previously diagnosed with pesticide poisoning or medically treated for any exposure to any pesticide, we are led to conclude that their symptoms are related to moderate lifetime exposure,” said Dr. Kamel.

Organophosphate insecticides, such as diazinon, disulfoton, azinphos-methyl, and fonofos, are used widely in agriculture and around the house. With over 25,000 brands of pesticides available in the United States, the use of organophosphates is probably more common than most people suspect. Many toxic nerve agents, used in milary applications are also also organophosphates.

Organochlorines are named as organic molecules bound with chlorine atoms. These include PCBs and DDT. Some organochlorines are also known as xenoestrogens because of their ability to mimic estrogen in the body. These compounds have been theorized to be at the root of a variety of estrogen-dominate illnesses in woman, like endometriosis and in wide spread genetic defects in wildlife like the three-legged frogs reported in Florida.

While this report does focus on farmers whose “moderate exposure” is likely higher than most people in the home, this report should serve as a caution to indiscriminate use of such products in the house and especially in the presence of children and those with weakened immune systems. Many of these compounds were initially popular because of their hardiness in the environment, meaning the compounds last longer to provide more killing effectiveness. This may be a good feature for the economics of agriculture and warfare, but at what consequence?

Selling Electricity Back to the Power Company
Wednesday 28 April 2010 @ 2:02 pm

Turbine companies are taking extra measures of precaution so the machines are more bird friendly. With new technology, researchers were also able to slow the rotation of the bigger wind turbines down. This was accomplished by making the blade angle in a different way. Also, larger wind turbines in the wind fields no longer have space for birds to get into the back where the shaft is located. In order for the bird to perch or nest, this means more bird fatalities were during bird migration apparently. Amazingly consumers believed companies designed the new wind turbines with carbon fiber blades that weighed more. Although we understood we might make a little bit of money by selling electricity back to the power company, we really wanted complete and total energy independence. We designed, built, and installed our own solar panels, and they supplied nearly 80% of our familys electrical needs; but we ran out of usable space before we got all the power we needed. Experts say that a $1,500 bearing fails unnoticed it can cause severe damage to the company including revenue loss and the need for a replacement gearbox with the price of $100,000!Gearbox failures account for the largest amount of downtime, maintenance, and lose of power production. They are absolutely non polluting and can be noise free also. The quantity of electrical power that you need determines the output of the turbine or turbines you will use. You can actually build your own wind power generator from auto parts at very low cost and generate free electricity. Residential wind turbines or wind generators can produce all or part of your power requirements. Your home built turbine can be mounted on your roof or on a free standing tower.Wind Turbine Refurbisher

What’s In Your Beverage?
Monday 11 January 2010 @ 3:12 pm

Calibration standards, performance audits, and the FDA’s never-ending safety, labeling, and inspection requirements are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dealing with the increasingly stringent quality control standards of the beverage industry. As these quality standards become stricter, beverage producers are increasingly called upon to get products to market faster using fewer resources, while simultaneously managing ingredient quality, and ultimately, risk.

Mix rigorous regulations and mounting market challenges with exploding competition and the opportunity for enormous economic reward, and it becomes obvious that products must be perfect the first time around to fulfill production requirements, comply with distribution standards, and ultimately provide each consumer with the exact same exceptional product every time.

All of which makes quality control more necessary than ever.

Quality Assurance in the beverage industry starts by ensuring that top quality gases are used to perform the carbonation process and continues through the bottling and distributing process with a high-tech quality control examination.

On the top of the list of gases regulated in the world of drink is carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the main components of many of the beverages produced today, including soda, beer, sparkling water, and sports drinks. CO2 has also become a major constituent of orange juice through supercritical CO2 processing during pasteurization and has even entered the world of dairy with the addition of “Refreshing Power Milk,” a new carbonated milk hybrid, to the refreshments market.

Leading beverage manufacturers in this $700 billion industry are taking the critical step to ensure purity of beverage-grade CO2 by using analytical support gases and quality assurance services. Since ensuring purity of CO2 is such a crucial factor in the beverage production process, choosing a specialty gas company to provide purification, calibration, and cross-reference services for your products should be a priority.

Keep in mind that specialty gas companies outside of the beverage industry hold a uniquely favorable position as authoritative and neutral third-party qualifiers. These companies provide experience in developing trace contaminant calibration standards as well as independence from the supply and certification of beverage grade CO2, which helps to ensure unbiased statistical and graphical reporting.

Regardless of the industry from which the service company originates, it is vital that it provides specialized service in the CO2 industry and adheres to industry standards on commercial quality with regard to CO2.

Some more guidelines to consider when choosing a Quality Control Specialty Gas Service: * Your CO2 supplier should provide certification and analysis indicating compliance with commercial quality standards, such as ISBT, the International Society of Beverage Technologists * Your quality assurance service company should have the resources available to create custom gas mixtures for CO2 ingredient quality control. Typical components include (but are not limited to) the following: Methane Ethane Ethanol Dimethyl Ether Ethyl Acetate Methanol Ammonia Nitric Oxide Nitrogen Dioxide Carbonyl Sulfide Acetaldehyde Benzene Cyclohexane Ethylbenzene Diethyl Ether Toluene m-Xylene p-Xylene o-Xylene * Preparing two sets of gas mixtures should be standard procedure for your chosen service company, with double analysis of each set to check for minor component stability, and guarantee a shelf life for the components. * To further assure accurate results, your service company should identify inaccuracies and verify analytical processes by having participant labs analyze blind internal audit standards. * Your service company should furnish a report to your company’s quality control department detailing analytical results, including a statistical representation of the performance of each participant laboratory. * Membership in the International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT) Quality Committee, Carbon Dioxide Subcommittee, should be maintained in order to keep abreast of emerging analytical methods and technologies within the beverage industry. * Top of the line service companies will provide CO2 Cross-Referencing Services to confirm the accuracy of critical analytical processes. These programs provide beverage manufacturers with a reliable and objective method of monitoring the performance of multiple laboratories who qualify carbon dioxide used in carbonated beverages as well as confirm ingredient quality. Cross-Referencing Service should be considered in order to: o Achieve the highest degree of confidence in the accuracy of analyses; o Confidentially identify inconsistencies or other problems in analytical processes; and o Maintain reliable and accurate intra-company quality assurance. * Most importantly, make sure the service company has top rate Internal CO2 Audit Standards to meet the most demanding accuracy requirements for virtually any type of customized mixture and that a Certificate of Accuracy is provided for each cylinder. By choosing a Quality Control Specialty Gas Service carefully, your company can be sure to keep pace with the ever-expanding list of regulations — and quite possibly gain an even larger piece of this multi-billion dollar pie.

Bright Planets Conjuncted to Form the Christmas Star
Monday 7 December 2009 @ 1:52 pm

The Christmas Star, astronomically speaking, is speculated to have been a conjunction of two or more of the 5 incandescent naked eye planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn. Another Star of Bethlehem possibility is Uranus, which very close to Saturn in 9 BC and Venus in 6 BC. This is unbelievable because Uranus moves very slowly and is only thinly visible. In truth, the that the Magi could have confounded one or more of the well-known planets with a star actually seems remote.

Occasionally, two or more of these self-propelling wanderers come together in a amazing conjunction. Perchance a planetary grouping of particular beauty; an exceptionally close conjunction of two planets or groupings of three or more making an eye-catching geometric figure in the sky may have taken place between the years 7 and 2 BC. A amassing like that would be quite unusual to the unexpecting eye.

One such event that is often cited occurred on the evening of Feb. 25, 6 BC involving Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and happened in the constellation of Pisces, the Fishes. If you have ever visited a planetarium for the traditional Christmas show, you probably already know the thrill of watching as the planetarium projector races back through time to recreate this unusual event. One such result that is often quoted occurred on the evening of Feb. 25, 6 BC involving Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and bechanced in the constellation of Pisces, the Fishes. If you have ever travelled a planetarium for the conventional Christmas show, you in all probability already experience the thrill of watching as the acknowledge the thrill of tracing as the planetarium projector races back through time to recreate this unusual event. Another viable account for the Star of Bethlehem is the three-times of Jupiter and Saturn between May and December in 7 BC; a tremendous triple or “great conjunction.”

Jupiter appeared to progress one degree north of Saturn on May 29; much the identical on Sept. 30; then finally a third time on Dec. 5. There is no uncertainty about the profile of these events, mostly opposite to the Sun in dark skies. As for their astrological impact, the Magi would have sure enough noticed that both planets did not look to separate widely between their conjunctions.

Should I Take Algebra?
Monday 6 July 2009 @ 1:25 pm

Algebra as a Scientific Discipline

Algebra is considered a main subdivision of maths which explains how to handle all situations involving numbers and variables. By default, there is so much to articulate about teaching and studying of Algebra as a generalized arithmetic which goes through systematic mathematical procedures such as induction, generalization and proof. So, the pupils get to develop their skills in algebra progressively, for example by getting the information from tutors or packages, which provide stepwise illustrative solutions. Algebra packages provide all the previously used ways of Algebra learning with a new scientific approach to drive the information smoothly into the student’s minds. Many students are not even aware of the full potential of algebra! They complain about its impracticality neglecting that Algebra, broadly maths, instructs their mind how to think logically and correctly. The typical way to learn Algebra is in school, from being a kid till becoming an adult students get their information from the teacher. With the enormous growth of technology, new techniques have been formulated to learn Algebra, such as using software programs which is a more handy way to learn Algebra. These packages deliver information in a progressive approach in to pupil’s minds.

Areas Addressed by Algebra

Like most superior sciences, Algebra covers a lot of areas and includes many theories and constructs. Gcf, or Greatest Common Factor , is one such concepts. Gcf means to rewrite the polynomial as a product of simpler polynomials or of polynomials and monomials. Solving fractions is one of the fundamental parts of algebra which basically gives pupils the chance to apply it to the real world. non-linear function represents any function which is a solution of a quadratic polynomial. Among other fundamental elements of algebra, multiplying and dividing radicals is also one of the primary ones. An individual can multiply and divide with radicals only if the index, or root, is the same. Other connected areas are Adding and Subtracting Radicals; a person can add or subtract radical terms only if both the index and the radicand are the same. Matrix operations include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Other fundamental areas are finding x-intercept of a line and y-intercept of a line - to get the x-intercept of a line, substitute zero for y in the equation and vice versa for finding y-intercept of a line.

Testing and Symptoms Provide Insight into Diagnosis of Mesothelioma
Thursday 11 June 2009 @ 7:26 am

Cancer of the mesothelium has a few major symptoms. Pleural mesotheliomas primary symptom is having trouble breathing as a consequence of pleural effusion ” the increase of fluid in the membrane, or pleura, around the lung. The next most common symptomis chest pain due to the tumor invading the chest wall. Other symptoms may include weight loss, fatigue, and night sweats

The primary symptomof patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, which is centralized in the abdomen, is fluid buildup (known as ascites) in the abdomen causing abdominal swelling, bowel obstruction, and stomach pain.

It is key to understand that these symptoms could be caused by a myriad of diseases or conditions. But if you have experienced any of these symptoms and have had asbestos exposure, you should see your doctor.

Pleural mesothelioma is problematic to diagnose, because many symptoms are also associated with less serious conditions. These symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or lower back pains due to accumulated fluid in the pleura
  • Burning up
  • Nausea
  • Breathy voice
  • Having trouble swallowing
  • Coughing blood

Self-diagnosis should never be attempted. Sufferers of the above symptoms should not panic, and should consult their doctor. A biopsy is the primary way the condition is confirmed. A pathologist takes a sample of tissue from the suspected area and performs an examination that will result in a very accurate diagnosis. Usually, biopsies do not hurt.

CT scans (Computed Tomography) are an option to avoid a biopsy. A CT scan is basically an X-ray procedure where cross-sectional images are taken as a scanner rotates around the body. Once in a while, a dye is ingested by the patient to help define the images. CT scans have an advantage over biopsies by being easier and non-invasive, and they are recognized as being effective in diagnosis. Beliefs vary whether a biopsy or scan is more cost-effective. If there are abnormalities, a biopsy may be needed on top of the CT scan to confirm whether or not the irregularity is a tumor, and if so, if the tumor is benign or malignant. It is also possible to diagnose pleural mesothelioma by testing a sample of fluid from the pleura for cancer cells.

Mesothelioma can also be screened and then diagnosed by any of these methods. Patients are screened when they suspect they may be at risk but do not have typical symptoms, to make sure they are not in danger or to catch the cancer as early as possible. Patients should be screened for mesothelioma if they have a history of asbestos exposure.

Applications of Algebra
Thursday 16 April 2009 @ 10:13 am

It is safe to say that algebra is the core of mathematics. An in depth knowledge of algebra and its basics is required before you could work on more complex mathematical problems. If someone asks you to get the product of 223 and 112, you can easily do it manually or with a computer. But when it comes to exponential (e) of 223 and logarithmic (log) of 112 then obviously, you will need some kind of algebraic calculator or algebra solver. Graphing a circle will be easy for this given formula X2 + Y2 = 4 but when it comes for an inequality like (X-2)2 + (Y-4)2 > 20 then it will be quite harder to plot the graph. In this situation algebra software applications can help you a great deal since you only need to enter the inequality and graph will be plotted within no time. Such software programs can easily solve any kind of algebraic, arithmetic and radical expressions of any kind of difficulty.

Domain and Range of a Function

Now it is very easy to work out the domain and range of functions like Y = X2, you can just tell that X and Y can take any real number from the X-Y plane but have you ever thought of defining the domain and range of log(tan 2x + sin 3x) = cosine(-4)(2x). But thanks to algebra calculating systems, you can now solve these complicated problems in very little time while being able to understand each and every step that it takes you to successfully resolve the mathematical question.

Coordinate Geometry

Now you can easily find the focus and directrix and whether parabola opens up or down by just inserting the equation into algebra Application. Addition, subtraction and multiplication of polynomials are quite deadening, since they involve lots of terms to manipulate. But algebra calculator will do this job in much less time and with 100% accuracy. Solving determinants and matrices of 3×3 or 4×4 order can become very hard since it involves lots of calculation; getting inverse of matrices even more so. However using algebra software programs will make this task much simpler.

So now you don’t need to start worrying when you see indices, rational numbers or exponential equations. Parabolas, hyperbolas or ellipses can all be easily graphed within computer algebra systems.

Arborvitae
Thursday 15 January 2009 @ 8:58 am

Arborvitae are commonly used evergreen shrubs or trees useful in urban areas where low maintenance and durability is needed. Many cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and buffers that are planted in rows. The form of arborvitae is small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach 50′, others only 3′. Most prefer full sun to partial sun. Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist , well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant. Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple remeady. Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow ,plant, and keep in shape.

The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size and quanity ordered.

Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color. We also have the American Arborvita known as “Tiny Tim”.This arborvita grows in zone 2 - 7. Its is a needled evergreen in the Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot to 1 foot tall. Its spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet. This is a plant that requires little work. Selecting quality arborvitae for the home landscape : When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlaped. Don’t buy any arbs bare rooted over 3′ tall. Any plant larger should be balled and burlaped.

Green Building Alliance Awards $140,000 in Grants
Tuesday 29 July 2008 @ 7:44 pm

Pennsylvania’s Green Building Alliance (GBA) recently announced the disbursement of grants amounting to $140,000 to recipients who were chosen based on a competitive criterion upon which they scrutinized a company, institution, or group’s capability in carrying out a sustainable green project. This program is part of GBA’s Green Building Product Initiative, which seeks to promote innovative and well-developed green buildings.

An estimated total of $558,000 Product Innovation Grants have been given away since December 2007.

In its 15 years of existence, GBA has successfully created various opportunities for Pennsylvania home, office, and business owners to move into the safer and healthier realms of environmentally-friendly living. These innovation grants serve as bridges between communities and organizations aiming for an improvement in both economic and environmental living conditions. It is an example that the government can definitely pick up and use as an inspiration for coming up with several sustainable green market programs, projects, and grants.

It also works in pretty much the same way that school contests are carried out; the most worthy or deserving groups or companies and institutions are awarded, while the others are given the chance to present innovative ideas. It serves as an impetus for groups to continuously produce better green products.

As the Green Building Alliance continues to churn out one program after another, it opens more avenues of positive change for communities that fully embrace economic prosperity and human well-being through green building practices.

At CEMEX, air quality is a priority with the cement company’s fusion of environment friendly programs and pro-safety policies

Smart Brief published an article about the Third Annual CEMEX U.S. Building Awards, which also highlights CEMEX air quality initiatives.
